Spectre 'Penny' mod? Empty Spectre 'Penny' mod?

Post  Zandor Tue Oct 11, 2011 2:45 pm

Basically I had a simple idea that hit me... took darn long enough though. (And yes to avoid the noob-factor; I *WILL* be attempting this mod since it seems plausible enough, just want some initial thoughts / feedback first just incase this isn't a good idea...)

For people who have done a 'Penny' mod to a Maverick; does it actually improve range/performance much? Reason is, I use Spectre's and don't have a Maverick, so I haven't actually tried it yet. I use Black Tactical springs in them, so I'd like to try and squeeze as much power out of it as I can...

Since the Mav and Spec have very similar plungers, I've been thinking about chopping the end rod piece off to make room for some 5cent coins to compress the spring (see pic below for cut location) ... all the rod seems to do is give the little indicator that it's primed where the stock clips onto.

    Spectre 'Penny' mod? Questionsu

So basically the question I'm asking is; has anyone already tried this? Did it succeed / fail?

A penny mod sucks. I'd like to say useless, but there may be those who will vouch for it. A spring addition or replacement is the way.

I brought up the idea of using a Kool Zumz (sp?) spring form Kmart, it's three bucks. You might need to sand down the orange back part thingy... or you can try a LSFG spring which has slightly larger outer diameter.

If you have about 15 bucks or so to spare, just grab a Spectre spring off informer. That would be the proper way to go IMO.

I don't see anything wrong with that idea, but whether or not the range increase is worth it or not is debatable.

Perhaps with the stock spring but with a BT version I wouldn't think you'd get much of an increase.

@2120: Yeh already got the BT spring which inf0rm3r sells. Initially I tried stock + LSFG spring combo but it gave me headaches trying to get it to prime properly...

@Unknown: Seems like it's not going to give me much of an increase then... hrmmm... now I need to think of something else to try xD

I'm not a big fan of the penny mod. I don't think it does ANY range increase whatsoever. Tests show anyway.

My Spectre was getting around 45 feet flat with a BT Mav spring and snap caps. I can't complain about that.

Maybe you could look at improving the o-ring seal? There are limitations to modding a Spectre due to its simplicity.

I've noticed reasonable range increases using the penny mod on Maverick's. Generally I use the BT replacement spring, but it tends to be a bit OP for some of the younger kids who I do minor mod's for (we're talking kids around 9 years old), who really struggle to prime it. With a few 5 cent coins (seeing as we're Aussie's, not yanks... haha), it gives a decent range increase, whilst still allowing it to be easily primed by these kids.

Realistically though, I doubt you'd notice a range increase that would be worthwhile on a Spectre with a BT spring. Couldn't hurt to try it out though...

    Cheers,

I must admit, I HAVE got good ranges with the penny mod (strangely enough). 3x 5 cent coins.

I used the BT spring and it didn't do any better, despite heavier cocking (that's not a dig by the way, just what happened in my case).

You have to be careful with the Mav to keep the air gap tight between the plunger and the barrel for best results.

I used brass shims both on the center shaft and the barrel carriage to make it all line up.

With a few other basic mods (AR's, glued clutch, etc) I was getting solid 60-70's slightly angled using informers blue snap cap stingers.

It's a good classic blaster, I should do a little kit for it...
