I always thought my bus driver friend was joking when he said there were bus watchers. Clearly he wasn't.

Awesome pictures BTW. What camera did you use? What kind of aftereffects (if any)?

I wont show you up by showing off my work here Luke. I only worked as a photographer for the best part of 17yrs and even did my trade in photography too, little good that trade certificate is now. And to think these days i make clothes... from a sports photographer to the rag trade at least one of them has a better chance of earning a dollar these days. If only digital would die!

    Hey Luke,

    I normally drive the following: 3551, 3800, 4000 and 4100.
We run 3 lead and 2 remote loco's with the 3551's
We run 2 lead and 1 remote loco with the 3800 (remote is normally a 3700)
We run 2 lead and 2 remote loco's with the 4000/4100

Average length is between 1650 and 1750 metres, with between 84 and 100 coal wagons.

Occasionally we use 1720 and 2200 class loco's, but not often, and normally just for shunting/ballast train.

Keeping on-topic, here's my first attempt at a sunrise:

Yeh mate, we're pretty fortunate like that. Pity the company we work for is run by idiot's....
Once they've finished upgrading the OHLE, we should be going to more 3800 class, which are absolutely brilliant loco's - so much power, even with only 3 loco's pulling 10400 tonne of coal and rollingstock...

    Cheers,

At least you have new loco's V/Line's N (Built 1985),P (Built 1984),Y (Built 1965) and A (Built 1984) class's are falling apart. On Thursday I had a cab ride in one of the N class's and the Loco to Base radio (Centrol) is pretty much unusable, our just happened to be called by Centrol about some cows on the track ahead and the location was unreadable, Lucky for us a incoming EMU flashed its lights at us warning us of the danger.

We have 2 x radio's in each loco, as well as a telephone, and a spare handheld radio. Communication is a vital part of safety, and we shut down loco's if they don't have working electronic communication.

As you'd be well aware, safety is a major factor, especially with rollingstock. A fully loaded coal train, doing 80 kph, will take nearly 1600 metres to come to a complete stop with an emergency brake application...

Sounds like there's a bit of dodgy stuff going on down your way mate... pretty sad to hear really.

    Cheers,
    Luke

Yeah it is, Our train was going 115km (Max for a loco hauled train) while the other EMU was doing 160 so it was quite lucky there was another train in the area, We do have 2 radio's in the cab but one is to communicate with the Conductor, In our EMU's (Vlocity's) we have 3 radio's but only 1 is for Centrol.

On the way back we were doing 160 and there was a station up ahead about 1000m away we applied the emergency breaks and just pulled up at the station in time so the breaking is not a problem in the newer EMU's.

Yeh, we're speed-restricted to 80kph. I'd love to get in to passenger services for a while...
It's the phenomenal amount of weight that makes it so slow to stop. Probably the biggest difference between passenger and coal, and that's also why we get a fair bit more pay.

Having to remember that you've got loco's 800m behind you, and knowing when to cut them in and out takes a fair bit of practice. If you get it wrong, you'll get put in to the windscreen... haha

    Cheers,

Here in Victoria most Train Drivers get $50ph + penalty rates and overtime so its not to bad for a Pass Driver and they are not Restricted to 80kph, Our DMU's (Not sure why I was saying EMU) are allowed 160 in Regional area's and most of the time 115 through Suburban areas while our Loco hauled trains are restricted to 115 at all times,

Here is a photo of a Vlocity's cab (DMU)

That looks like a pretty nice cab - a lot more modern than ours... oh, and a cd player... we're not allowed to have any luxuries like that!! haha

We work a 40 hr week, and are on an annualised salary of $118K, with 25 days Annual leave, and 12 days Family Leave. Not sure what that works out to on an hourly rate, but I think it's somewhere around $53/hr flat. If we work an overtime shift, it's worth $92/hr, so they're pretty nice shifts to get a hold of, especially when we do 12 hours!!

Very Nice, there is also a bar fridge to the left of the photo and the chairs are leather.

This is the train I am referring to, its Victorian Built at Bombardier.
