    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration Empty The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration

Post  Jeo Tue Sep 13, 2011 9:27 am

    Howdy all!

First up I want to give credit to bakabill for his semi auto Magstrike that provided the original inspiration to have a go at this (and in a round about way, I should probably mention Banshee's Blast-Strike on NH and Lefty's Mega-Strike too).

Basically my situation was that I'd seen Bakabill's Magstrike write up here and thought it was worth a crack, then realised I had a only somewhat reliable Rapidfire AS-20 sitting at the bottom of my Nerf cupboard. Thought about it for a day or two and decided bugger it, I'll just pick up another BBUMB and give this a go.

I'm not going to go into any real detail with this as it should be fairly self explanatory, but I am happy to answer any questions.

So to kick off with, we have an AS-20.

First mock up of how it will sit.

The stock release valve/now the BBUMB tank refill button.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN2587

Where the tank will fit + the start of the RSBC.

    Moar cutting!
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN2589

Tank with the check valve attached.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN2591

Right, I apparently missed a few photos here but you get the idea. Reducer on the front to the t-piece + 30cm of PETG to make the barrel, PVC pipe from the back to the t-piece to the back of the blaster, small hole cut to accommodate said PVC, screw fitting to close off the back of the RSBC.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN2604

    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN2605

Still need to figure out what I'm going to use to cover the barrel as I'm not a fan of the exposed/fragile PETG. Tossing up between just slipping over another piece of PVC pipe and painting it black to match the colour scheme, or whether a recon barrel extension would look any good.

Ranges are what you'd expect from from a BBUMB; consistently hitting 30m. The cool part however is that I'm getting that range with 4 darts, in the space of 3 seconds

    Nice work there mate.

Maybe a pic of the trigger to tank piston connection would make things a bit clearer for the less experienced.

Wish I had of kept one of my RF20's now... haha

    Cheers,

    Great work!

I don't own a RF20 but if there was a way to retain use of the turret it would be beyond awesome - even if it had to be rotated manually XD.

Cheers guys! I'll get some internal pictures of the finished product up soon enough.

I'm sure it's possible but it would take some pretty ingenious packaging of the tank as a decent chunk of it fits where the turret did.

As in you gave this a go yourself and it's not working? Any idea where you've gone wrong/any pictures?

Whoops, been a while. Full post now onFoam Dart Goodness yet I haven't updated here... Lets fix that!

    Where it's at currently...
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN3885-2

The tube from the fill valve at the bottom leads to the stock BBUMB check valve.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN3884-2

The AS20 trigger is attached to stock lever from the BBUMB.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN3886-2

It's then sprung to pull the trigger back and to close the tank.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN3887-2

I took the whole post that originally held the lever in the BBUMB too. Made things much easier.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN3888-2

    Trigger in it's natural position.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN3890-1

    Trigger pulled.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN3891-1

The trigger has been removed in this photo so you can see the slot I had to cut in the bladder tank.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN3893-1

This random orange thing was glued in the bottom of the shell as a stopper for the bladder.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN3894-1

See! Here it is with the bladder fully expanded, hard up against the stopper.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN3895-1

I had to do this so that it didn't interfere with the trigger mechanism.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN3896-1

That's about it in a nutshell. The barrel is 300mm of 17/32 brass, the back half of the RSBC holds 4 darts, there's a screw on end cap on the end.
    The AS-4: BBUMB/Rapidfire integration DSCN3885-2

    So how does it all work? From the top;

Unscrew the end cap, insert 4 darts, screw it back on.
    Pump 10-15 times.
Press the fill button at the bottom (fills the BBUMB tank from the AS20 bladder).
Flick the front of the blaster towards the ground (gets another dart jammed in the barrel).
    Pump 10-15 times.
Pull the trigger to fire (opens the BBUMB tank).
Press the fill button, flick the front of the blaster towards the ground, pull the trigger to fire.
Press the fill button, flick the front of the blaster towards the ground, pull the trigger to fire.
Press the fill button, flick the front of the blaster towards the ground, pull the trigger to fire.

Tada! Start at step 6 and you can fire 4 darts in 3 seconds, each hitting ~30m flat. Check the video below for an example (albeit nice and slow so you can see what's going on).

(I tried so many times to get that to embed, nuts to that you're getting stuck with a link)

You and your hopper clips. It won't be clean anymore though with a hopper clip though. I like how it's all streamline. Sounds solid as well. Nice work Jeo. Le-sexy nerf blaster. Probably needs a dart door though for quicker loading.

I'd forgotten all about this... one day I'll replicate it, as I have all the parts lying around

It would be nice to see it with the Recon barrel....

    Nice work as always mate!!

Was only a suggestion to avoid the flicking and have faster rate of fire.

Acerised, you know we have this feud about RSCBs vs Hoppers all the time.

A hopper on this blaster would be very interesting though. I think Coop on youtube made a big blast version of this, except he's got an HPA tank on it. Maybe that's what you need Jeo? A massive backpack air tank :D. I think that would be an interesting addition.

I think the amazing thing in this blaster design that it looks almost completely stock

    Cheers guys.

My understanding of hoppers was that they only liked shorter darts? We only use stock darts in Canberra.

If you make your own wye, then you can decrease the angle of the feed so that full length darts will work.

Personally, I think it wouldn't look real good on this - I like it fine how you've made it!!

Jeo, to a degree yes with US Wye fittings. The degree of the angle is approximately 45 degrees, which allows the use of short darts but Im not sure with streamline length darts.
The bend may be too steep for the stock dart too slide through.

However homemade Aussie Wyes are around 30-35 degree angle to accommodate streamline length darts. Works flawlessly.
