Just wondering what everyone's view is on the future direction of foam blaster sports. I want to know how others feel about the sport growing, and if people want better blasters that they don't have to spend loads of time modding to get any kind of decent ranges from.

With n-strike "elite" blasters coming out in 6 months or so, and informer's darts being widely used at wars instead of streamlines, it makes me wonder why no-one from the nerfing community has tried to have a "competitive" blaster prototyped or manufactured.

tl;dr: would you pay a little more money for a blaster that's built for the purpose of being a better option at wars (and for fun, obviously)?

    Definately.

If I had the time I would design an air powered blaster for the sole purpose of target shooting (not to be used on people of course) and another one for wars.

The main problem with this is:
    1. Prototyping and manufacturing requires a significant time, effort and capital investment.
    2. It makes little economic sense, to order the manufacturing of something in low quantities.

Foam and dart tips are much more feasible to produce and sell, due it being simple items and having a significant turnover.
I would believe that inf0rmer has many bouts of headaches, getting all these things organised though.

If you had access to the right items it would make it easier.

A 3D prototype printer would be awesome for this but they aren't very cheap.

Wow man, that printer is a total rip off. If you want a basic one you can get them as cheap as $500 (cheaper if you make it yourself).

This is the one I ordered http://store.makerbot.com/replicator.html it is a bit more expensive than the one you linked but it has a much larger print bed, duel extruders and plenty more features.

Mine should arrive in the next 4 weeks so if anyone wants to get stuff printed they should hit me up

http://reprap.org/wiki/Main_Page if you want some really good information at least to get your started.

I had considered printing out dart heads but I fear that the plastic would prove to be.....quite lethal. That aside I will actually try to print out a couple dart heads and a few vortex discs too for fun.

Anyways my opinion is that the shell should be built with raw parts. If you are going to use a printer use it to do the internal components.

I wouldn't use the darts for hitting people unless it was that bloke that lets his dog crap in my front yard all the time.

I want some darts made to be precise so I can use them to sight in the LS. With normal dart making methods, it's almost impossible to get the dimensions exactly the same as another

wow this thread blew up in under a day...

what I am considering, is gathering some collective knowledge and designing a blaster specifically for competition, and releasing the design to anyone who wants to work on it or make it a reality. I certainly don't have the capital right now, but I do have some contacts for rapid prototyping, but they'd still be costly.

here's what I'm thinking, and anyone with input is encouraged to do so:
1: the blaster must have compatibility, both in the respect that it accepts Nerf clips and darts, and in the respect that certain parts are compatible with future models (perhaps a set of internals that you just drop in to whatever shell and tighten up?)

2: need to find knowledge of legal stuff. e.g:how powerful can it be before it's classed as illegal/ a firearm etc.

3: need to find out design limitations, and best/cheapest ways to construct parts (injection molding, 3D printing, CNC etc...)

4: must be built STRONG. that's the key here. we've all seen the limitations of "toy" blasters, we need to exceed that to progress.

    Carry on.

Maybe design the known failure spots to have insertion points for steel reenforcement.

It would be awesome to make it out of alloy.

I was thinking that, 7075-T6 alloy is extremely strong for alloy. I think plunger, breech, bolt and anything under any decent load in a competitive blaster should be over-built to ensure it will never break. the problem with OMW kits is that they have to make them fit in Nerf blasters. if you're designing a blaster from scratch, however, you can make things in your own format, make things thicker etc..

    The possibilities could be endless.

It would be easiest to have the internals the same and have the shell inter changeable. That way the technical bit is done

perhaps the way to start would be to set up design parameters and save it as a CAD file that is used for every shell design.

    That could work.

If you get a proto typer, people could just design one they want, then draw it in CAD and have it suit the generic internals.

A competition blaster would be basically what I'm building and others have built. Nerf shells are one of the most durable parts and have loads of room for reinforcement or even cheap replacement, so they don't really need to be messed with. Throw in some homemade internals (small high pressure tank and two solenoids will fit in most longarm style nerf blaster shells) allowing airgun ranges with comparatively high ROF using a compressor, massive reserve tank or both.

Just gotta look up PCP air rifles, homemade airsoft and paintball markers for inspiration.

If you are looking for a basic build design, then making it a modular design, something like a recon would be a good start, it can be used for as a short weapon or with multiple attachments, ie a longer barrel, rear stock etc - but obviously doing it properlly so that the extra muzzle isnt taking half the power and crap and ruining the gun just for some looks for attachment options.

Its a great idea, something to seriously consider if there are some financial backing and prototyping available.

Yep, sounds like a good plan.

Just don't be disappointed when it comes to the legal side of it. When inf0rm3r first started testing his chrony, I'm fairly certain he discovered that just about every modded blaster had a higher fps than what is legal (I'm assuming for Qld, but this may be national too).

Virtually any of the big air blaster's would be illegal with fps, as would the main springer's (TS/Octo, BBLS etc).

    Cheers,

Would an over-sized plunger system be practical? (making a plunger system the same as the LS only bigger to increase internal air volume)

We all know that more air=more power.
