    NerfHaven Empty NerfHaven

Post  taerkitty Sun Apr 03, 2011 11:07 pm

Rather than dogpile onto the "Did you have fun" thread (yes, I did, btw!), someone asked about NerfHaven's recent security issues.

They have very competent people working on it. I'm not one of them, so I can only recount what I've read on #nerfChat IRC channel .

From a user's perspective, the site is up, but the content is not. I'm sure it's only a matter of days before it's back to normal.

Is it normal that most of us here are not being validated on Nerf haven?

Which means that we can't post, pm etc.

Thanks for the update, was wondering if after the site issues they made it accessible only for members who're past the validation stage.

Yes, because (through the subtle name of their site) they intentially operate the forum of an elitist nature and escape from the rest of us "ignorant masses".

Unless you've managed to cut the mustard in some way...

Also, can you people start putting titles in PMs? I can't be bothered trying to figure out what the subject and context is within a PM.

Oh god, I am now going to have nightmares after seeing a picture of a baby with Ichthyosis. Coupled with a mind screw of a distorted rendition of ring-a-ding-ding.

I was okay with the previous picture of Asuka Kazuya. Nevermind that...

Do not go there. You have been warned.

Right now, it has been reported by some that malware attacks have reached certain visitors. As well as avoiding any Ichthyosis nightmares, it's best to stay clear in case of attacks.

I have received this info while chatting in that chatroom taer provided above. I also decided to start using my six year old account from NerfHQ to try and buy stuff there.

To build on this, as a merely a fellow NIC member w/o any security expertise or admin rights to any NIC site, I suggest:

    • Removing all NH shortcuts from your browsers.

    • Removing NH URLs from your history. This can be done either by clearing your Internet browsing history, or by typing 'nerfhaven' in your address bar, pressing down-arrow, then DEL for each URL your browser has cached.

    • Removing NH cookies from your browser. This is an option not normally selected by default when you delete your Internet browsing history. Firefox allows you to browse and delete individual cookies. IE does not. (I cannot speak for Chrome, Safari, or Opera, sorry.)

    • For those who are truly paranoid, you can blackhole Nerfhaven.com and http://www.nerfhaven.com by editing your host file. Please search for directions on how to do this properly.

    • Again, I am not a security expert by any means, but I remember these steps from posts by security experts from other BB hacks.

Looks like they're back up, but have deleted all members who were waiting for validation, and aren't accepting any new registrations at the moment.
