Beauty and the Geek scouts Empty Beauty and the Geek scouts

Post  Silent Scope Thu May 12, 2011 7:28 am

OMG, I got the funniest PM ever hit my inbox to the point that I have to show you all. And because it's from an admin, it's approved (no one delete this or else).

    Read:

    To The Administrators of Oznerf

I’m a casting producer with Southern Star Entertainment and we’re casting for the next series of Beauty and the Geek for Channel 7.

We’re looking for academically gifted guys under 30 who would like to apply to appear on the show as a geek. I’ve been looking at your website and I think it would be fantastic to cast someone with a big interest in nerfguns, nerfwars or HvZ. Beauty and the Geek has been hugely popular for Channel 7, attracting over 1million viewers nationally every week – which makes it a great medium to profile and promote the nerf community!

I wondered if you’d be able to get the word out to your members or anyone you’re in touch with that would make a good ‘geek’ for the upcoming series.
Apart from being a lot of fun – there’s a $100, 000 cash prize on offer……think of all the nerf guns you could buy with that!

Essentially we’d be interested in hearing anyone who’s uber intelligent, as well as confidently quirky but perhaps a bit socially awkward – who has a few geek interests outside of study & work….be it HvZ, LARP, comics, cosplay, anime, sci-fi, computers, chess etc.

I'm writing to see whether we could post a notice on your forum to say we are looking for people interested in applying for the upcoming series. Alternatively I have a flyer in the form of a jpeg which could be forwarded on to your members. We’ll be conducting open auditions across the Eastern States of Australia at the end of this month (May 2011). Anyone who’s interested needs to register their details at our website beforehand: ("Link omitted for plugging reasons")

Many Thanks; if you’d like more information or to discuss this further please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I'd appreciate the opportunity to chat further to someone about what goes on in your nerf community!

    Best Regards,
    *******
Which brings me to my point: I'm not eligible to apply for this show anytime soon. While I do acknowledge that what we do can be a tad "geeky" as one may describe it, the fact that I've got just the one or two hobbies whilst undergoing my nightclub bartender gig puts me on the very median of the geek<------normal------>cool scale. Unfortunately, society itself presents me with the predicament that I'm neither of the two, and thus will not be bound to situations of "geeks hooking up with hotties" or "cool people are the life of the party and hook up". But meh...

In short: I'm smart and geeky but not enough for the show. I'm too cool and smooth for the show but not enough to be the big hit at the party.

    So yeah...

    Damn, I just turned 31!!

I mod nerf, and build lego and scale models, so that's a couple geeky requirements.

Admittedly, I'm a tradesman, and frequent the gym often.

Where does that sit me on the scale SS?

Plus, you know, you have a wife, mate. Just as a little reminder.

I don't think I'd go down well enough. The moment you get an eyebrow piercing and spend most nights drinking with your mates instead of studying, you're just not quite geek material. Plus star trek can go ta hell.

I do like that we're prime candidates though. That makes me smile.

I'm really sad that beauty and the geek doesn't have any horrific fugly people on it. Like, they're all kind of "passable, but look nice when well groomed." There are no honest to god bungly-spawned chuds. They find love too!

    I don't think I qualify anyways.
I'm just cherry picking the "nerdy" bits out of myself.
No. I'm actually trying hard to promote myself as a geek.

    @ littlebro05
Try not to get yourself into this wretched hobby of figure collecting.
    It's a bit like crack.
Bloody expensive hobby. It wasn't so bad when I started with maybe about 2-3 girls a year, but now it's getting to about the same PER MONTH.
Then again, those guys know what I like, and they're making more of that shit and releasing them for purchase more often.

At least I have yet to upgrade to a harder drug like one of these, unlike my friends (horrible tragics they are, though I am gradually getting swayed to the darker side)...

Really hate the generalization and stereotyping employed by Southern Star's Marketing department, basically to be eligible for this show you MUST be social awkward, any shred of charisma and you won't get through, which is where I think I fit in, I may have hobbies considered "Nerdy" but I'm comfortable with that because I can quite easily associate with others, I'm outgoing etc etc.

Of course they are stereo-typing. They are auditioning for people who are socially awkward, whether you call them geeks/nerds or whatever, that is what the basis of the show revolves around. As for them generalising that people who have nerf as a hobby are considered geeks, that's fine also. I'm sure there are a number of us on here who don't consider themselves geeks, which I imagine would be a similar scenario for other hobby clubs that they have approached.

Being socially awkward doesn't mean that you can't easily associate with other people. I know a few people who struggle to interact in unfamiliar social environments, but thrive in other social activities when in comfortable/familiar surroundings.

If only I was old enough, I could probably fit the requirements:
    - Still plays with Lego
    - Plays with Nerf
    - Has large toy gun collection (non-Nerf)
    - Very socially awkward, especially around girls
    - Asian stereotype
    - Pretty much answer sheet in maths
    - Prefers reading, playing games, with lego and Nerf rather than simply 'socialising'
    - Finished Gr 8 Piano and Gr 3 Trumpet
    - Haven't had a Maths Test score below 85% in several years (mostly 90+)
    - Bad scores in engrish (deliberate spelling error)
    Now to get older....:P
