well, ive been thinking of making a gas powered nerf gun and i have my grandpa's shed full of welding tools and machinery parts, so i am capable of doing this, i just want some tips before i start this experiment, and im making a metal shell and it will look like an old ww2 M1903 springfield sniper.

and i have blueprints in process and i have the parts needed too, i just want some tips on what to do and what not to do.

    thanks.

Firstly, keep in mind that air pressure, even at a few PSI, is dangerous. A container filled with too much air pressure can turn into a shrapnel grenade, without any warning.

I dont recommend undertaking a project like this, unless you are familiar with physics, mathmatics, and the materials you are using.

Also, good knowledge of the tools you plan to use, is a good start. Take the welder for example. Is it Oxy Acetalene? Mig? Arc? Tig?
Different types of welders work in different ways, and are built for different jobs.

A Mig welder will kill 4 TIMES QUICKER, than sticking a fork in a power point.

I dont mean to scare you out of doing your project. There are just alot of saftey concerns, with something like this.

However, a project like this can be very rewarding if done right.

    A FEW DO'S:
Always keep safety a first priority, and always keep your workspace clean.
If it's your first attempt, keep it simple.
Use low pressures to test (only a few PSI).
Draw out your ideas before building them.
    Measure twice, cut once.

    A FEW DONT'S:
Dont put yourself, or others in danger. Test from a distance, and make sure no-one is in the test area.
Dont use soft plastics to hold high pressure.
Dont use a tool for a job that its not designed for.

The best thing i can advise: IF YOU DONT KNOW... ASK SOMEONE THAT DOES.

As with any pressure vessel that has not been tested.

IF YOU CAN SEE IT, IT CAN KILL YOU!

Use a safety inflation cage if you are using something previously untested. I personally have had a lot of high pressure air explosions happen right next to me. One of which picked me up and threw me over my ute, unconscious.

Do not underestimate the danger here, proper rated safety glasses or visor, and industrial 28Db plus rated earmuffs. Ears bleed, believe me. And it hurts.

That sounds like a nasty learning curve!

Yeah it hurts alot. The shock wave coming from a truck tyre and wheel assembly, was enough to; Rupture my left eardum, Break 2 ribs, and cause bruising so bad I was bleeding through my skin, like someone had painted me red but there was no wound.

    So safety first kids.
