Shadowhawk Trigger Mod (pSyk's "clean" version) Empty Shadowhawk Trigger Mod (pSyk's "clean" version)

Post  psyk Wed Aug 31, 2011 8:29 pm

    Hello hello!

When Jaxx Pacific announced their Max Force series, I went crazy over the Shadowhawk... until I found out that it was not only a spitwad blaster, but it had no trigger.

However... the blaster itself appealed to me so much that I decided I'd get one just to convert it to fire darts and have a proper working trigger, much like how I converted the Xploderz Xranger.

    *****DISCLAIMER*****

Please read through the entire write-up first before attempting your own version.
I wish to warn all of you that the way I did it is really messy on the inside because
I went through alot of trial and error to get the result I was going for.

After reading through the whole write-up, I'm sure that you'll understand what I
went through and I know for sure that you guys will end up with a better,
cleaner, more efficient version of this. Thanks.

Right! Let's get straight to it.

Things you need: (things I used)
    - Dremel with Sanding Drum & Cutting Bit
    - Random spare trigger piece
    - L-bracket
    - Hotglue gun (with hotglue please)
    - Bunch of springs (small sized)
    - Screws (varying sizes depending on what L bracket you use)
    - spare piece of plastic (I used the handle of an old paintbrush)

Before I show you the pictures I want to make it clear that I did not plan to make a "step by step" sort of write-up.
    Okay.

So open up your blaster and you should see this:
Shadowhawk Trigger Mod (pSyk's "clean" version) 001

    a closer look:
Shadowhawk Trigger Mod (pSyk's "clean" version) 002

I know it's not shown in this write-up but I actually chopped the output down, and gooped on a new barrel and made it an internal in-line clip.
Check the vid at the end of the write-up where I talk a lot and give you a firing demo.

    Right.

So at the area where I say "Make a cut here", I know it's kinda vague right now but take a look at the next pic and you'll understand.

Shadowhawk Trigger Mod (pSyk's "clean" version) 003

Basically the cut area is to accomodate the new "tooth" notch that's glued and screwed down into the L-bracket.
That notch is fashioned out of the scrap plastic I mentioned in the "parts list". I got that plastic piece from the body of an old paintbrush.
I have no idea what material it is... maybe Polycarb?
    It's definitely NOT acrylic though.

This will be part of the catch mech of the trigger setup.
The rest is actually kinda easy to understand while looking at the picture.

Why do I have 2 areas of hotglued springs?
Because the one on the back provides stability for the L-bracket and the one just below the tooth notch acts as the "catch spring".

Oh yes, I know I didn't mention it in the picture (but I guess this would come with common sense...),
but dremel out the grip area of the shell so that you can fit the L-bracket in, with enough space for a little movement.

    another pic:
Shadowhawk Trigger Mod (pSyk's "clean" version) 004

Sorry, I forgot what trigger I was using. It might have been a Buzz Bee Ultimate Snipe Blast trigger.
I know I cut it into the shape you see above.

The trigger has nothing holding it down. It won't slip out because the slot I cut is almost exactly in the size of the trigger and it rests nicely against the 1/2" pvc stub.

    We're almost done:
Shadowhawk Trigger Mod (pSyk's "clean" version) 005

Measure the correct place where you have to cut your notch for the tooth to go in.
Cut a notch, and also shape the end of the priming rod so that it will travel over the tooth.

Why did I chop the front?
    SHOTGUN PUMP FTW!!!!!!!!!

This is so that you can have the grip return to the "forward" position instead of having it to sit at the back end of the priming stroke.

Why did I salvage the rubber piece from the front of the blaster and stick it at the head of the priming rod?
Because the head of the priming rod will smash into the back screwport of the priming grip.
    Logic, my friend. Logic.

Now once you're done, it should look something like this:
Shadowhawk Trigger Mod (pSyk's "clean" version) 006

Now... before you make this fire darts, remember to upgrade the spring.
Inbetween taking these pictures and filming the vid,
I slipped a slightly smaller O-ring infront of the stock O-ring and now it's getting a 100% seal.
Also, I've added a return spring to the pump so it works just like how a PAS does.

For a firing demo (yes, with darts, not spitwads) and everything else (like seal demo, etc),
check my vid (2 parts... LONG but in-depth vid.).

Oh man... with all these 'new trigger' designs coming out for the shadowhawk... I really want one for myself! Too sad it costs $79 dollars though =\.

    Looks sweet as.

That looks very comfortable to hold, although I'd like to see a clip accepting version. It is very expensive, as Lil'bro said, but I'm still tempted to get one, especially now:D

Also, it's nice to see that we don't have a pathetic filter like NH has...

I think this is a very good mod, though it still appears quite hard and not recommended for newbie modders.

If you are talking about clip accepting as in the blaster able to fire Nerf foam darts, it is not going to be easy. It seems the internal space and barrel is too tight to fit a foam dart, you'll have to gut out the internal as well as change the barrel.

    Nice work, as usual psyk.

Just wondering what the ranges were with Ahtanie's stefan's?

Considering adding this to the collection, but the price is a bit steep at present.

Good to see you doing some modding away from "the shop" haha

That's right... it's a little steep, and well... honestly it is very comfortable to hold. It's heavy, but in another sense, the plastic is really sturdy and it feels good in your hands. Makes me feel "manly". LOL.

You're right, it's definitely not recommended for newer, less experienced modders. I knew exactly what I wanted when I cracked it open, but I took many detours trying to achieve what I wanted. And yes, you're right the second time too, you need to do a proper rebarrelling, and you need to dremel the insides for your barrel to fit. Trying to make this clip accepting... well... is just gonna be a bloody messy job. IMHO, I'd rather go for a complete reshell instead of trying to make it accept clips.

    Cheers,

Yeah I still mod, but at a much slower rate than I did at my shop. Work comes first right now.
As for the ranges, I had to upgrade the spring to one with a load of about 16kgs (thanks to our friend makeitgo), and with the 6-stefan in-line clip + 8inch barrel, I'm getting ranges of about 65-75ft flat. I'm pretty sure that you can get a much better range if you hopper it, but hey, I weigh cosmetics over range / power.

Hmm I'm bit surprised you only get 65-75ft range for the stock paper splat, I read the stock range is up to 100ft, thus the advertised claim.

Oh snap! I was talking about slug stefans! hahahah
yes, the "spitwads" hit about 100ft stock. That's no lie.
People who have reviewed it will vouch for it too.

However, once you convert it to fire darts while using the stock spring...........

    lol.

I'm here to thank you Psyk for this mod guide as I was able to attempt this mod yesterday. Bought a Shadow Hawk from Kmart clearance rack last week for $40. I'm so slow it took me the whole day to finish this supposedly moderate-level mod. Mind you I didn't have the exact components like you e.g. my L bracket I was able to find around my house needed some cutting and grinding to fit. Mine able to work with just one return spring as I used a cut-down Longshot Front Gun's spring, which is strong for this purpose.

One question about Shadow Hawk is the two equal size white O-rings inside the plunger. One is on the plunger head and the second one is inside the plunger tube, I discovered this second O-ring is warped and slightly out of shape, and it just sits (unsecuredly) inside my plunger tube, not glued down. Is that how it is supposedly be?

    Hey Psyk,

good work on the trigger, ive been copying and modifying to utilise stuff i have around the house, or more likely trying to find anything i can get my hands on after my boy being into my tools. Technically this mod makes this gun an illegal weapon tho, but hey those pidgeons should have thought about that sooner b4 crapping all over our sheds and the like.

Hmm... that's probably why they've been allowed into Australia, the same as those exploders water guns because none of them have triggers. I guess it's up to use to mod them to use triggers.
