    Post  clunk07 Thu Jun 16, 2011 11:57 am

    Hey guys,

I've had a heap of people PM me about how I do my paint jobs. Rather than continue to reply with the same answer, I thought it would be an idea to post some pics of my painting process. This isn't really a write-up or guide, just some pics on the steps that I take.

Obviously, alot of the work is in the prepping of the shell for paint.
Here's a good write-up by Phuong and Servulus, so I won't be covering any of that:

    http://www.oznerf.forumotion.com/t2096-oznerf-s-frequently-asked-questions

Also, if you have questions about paint type etc, try reading this first:

    http://www.oznerf.forumotion.com/t2810-paint-brands-on-nerf-guns?highlight=paint+brands

Okay, let the bulk pictures begin:

    Shell primed with two coats.

Undercoat x 2, to ensure the primer doesn't show through.

Visual guide to blaster painting Dsc_0837

Diagonal stripes of the 3 main colours for the scheme.

Visual guide to blaster painting Dsc_0838

    Stencilled midtones and overall lightening.

Visual guide to blaster painting Dsc_0839

    Black stencilling added for contrast.

Visual guide to blaster painting Dsc_0840

Seeing as I'm using such a light feature colour, I've left the stencilling of it to last. I've also over-stencilled to ensure some decent highlights.

Finally, a bit more white stencilling to emphasise the green highlights, and achieve an overall lighter paint scheme.

    Finished product.

Some of the stencils I use, cut out from Overhead transparency sheets.

    Cheers,

He could do a clear coat, but if it scratches, there's enough coats of primer, undercoat etc, for it to not
    scratch back to plastic.

That would ruin the outermost coat, ruining the paint-job, which is bad...

All I know is, everyone advised me to do a clear coat

I definitely use clear coat, but I still have to wait for the topcoat to finish drying, then stencil, then detailing etc. And obviously, there wouldn't be much point in showing the final coat of clear, as it wouldn't show up very well.... haha

Looks like the skull has become my "tag" now, as it's made it from longshot to stampede as well. Outlining is done with Molotow acrylic marker's - not the best mix with enamel rattle can's, but saves me a fortune in not having to pay dangerous goods postage.

The clear coat would show up if you sprayed too much of it :D, also do you handpaint?

Hey, I try to avoid hand-painting, as it's just too time consuming. I'm looking in to an airbrush once my shed is built, but that's still quite some time away.

Thanks Brad!! haha - I am slowly getting better.

    Nice work Clunk!

I like the layers you do.

You made me realise i over-kill my paint jobs.
    Currently painting my TS.

    7 coats of primer.
    10 coats of base coat.
3 coats of clear to come.

Yeah i know, but i applied very light coats. I just wanted to use the cans up really.
Its added extra weight thats for sure.

Its my last blaster that i'm modding, so yeah its getting over killed! Haha.

yeh, I'd only see it as an issue if you were spending bulk coin just so you could do that many coats... haha. You've got more patience than me obviously.

Yeah if it was in my line of many blasters to mod, then theres no way i would have painted it like this. Weather is hampering further painting, damn melb weather, haha. I should throw a heater in the garage..

Cold weather is buggering me up a bit, I've tried to do some distressed paint cracking on my last two commissions. It's turned out pretty good, but was alot of hard work for a relatively easy task.
