help paint job

Hi, I would like to paint my nerf longshot but I don't know which kind of paint to use (well spray paint) and where to get it from it. It must be cheap. Any ideas?
I'm not too worried about it going wrong as I don't like the gun and I just want this to be a test paint job.

This automated system for post correction should not require this much processing power to understand your posts. Do better next time.

The cheapest stuff i have found is around $2.50 a can, its called Australian export, or Fiddly bits.) AE is sold at supercheap auto and dollars and sense, while FB is sold at bunnings.
Everything else is upwards of $4.00 a can. Brands like Dulux or white knight are around $8.00.
Dont forget the primers and clear coats etc.

Hand paint wise, I have found that, although expensive ($5.00 for 50ml), Warhammer 40k paints are excelent for small things, and big. They turn out great.

Also, you really need to be patient when waiting for paint to dry. Other wise, there will be smudges, fingerprints etc if you touch it to early.

Dont forget to sand before painting! you can get around 1.5mtrs of sandpaper for around $3.00 a roll at bunnings (where i live anyway)

If you want a good paint job, cheap is not your thing. If you want a **REDACTED** paint job, then you can be cheap.

And don't forget to pull apart your gun before you start painting it, unless you just want a painted desk ornament.

I used the cheap stuff on my Home made shell for a titan. It worked quite well, but it wasnt a nerf blaster, so it could/would depend on the material that's being painted.
I was impatient , and smudged mine then put paint where I didn't want it, so its a little messy in the middle, but here is a few pics on how it turned out:




It turned out good for cheap paint, but the orange was done with white knight squirts or fiddly bits, and it wasnt as bright as it should be >.>. Dont think I'm buying squirts again. But the Australian export was great, and the red is awesome, I call it Titan red.

And with the pull apart, I definitely recommend that, unless your hand painting, but even then you should. Take a pic of the internals before you take them out, then sand both sides of
shell paint, let it dry, then place internals back in. Or, you could cover up the trigger and other moving areas etc and paint. Read guides on the internet first. There is a fabulous hand painting/spray painting one over at www.nerfhaven.com.

Gotta remember what material the Longshot's made out of as well. The titan's got that grippy sort of grained plastic, whereas the longshot has smooth slippery plastic which shit doesn't stick too along with the grippy stuff.

Hence sanding. Whats your opinion on my titan shell though? It's pvc pipe. What exactly do you mean by the titans got that grippy sort of grained plastic, do you mean an actually titan shell or mine?

Dude, make sure you have a proper set up. Set up and area with:
OLD newspaper on the area you're painting, and the immediate area around it, if you're painting it on the floor, lots of newspaper, if its on a bench against a wall, put some on the wall and around the area too. Make sure you sand it quite a bit, until it's nice and smooth, but a sort of grainy feel. Make sure its OK with your parents too. Wait at least 30mins between coats, but 1hr to be sure. Dont be impatient. Read the spray paint label and follow instructions. Spray in a ventilated area too. Good luck!

Well i just got my mum to get me some spray paint for plastics from bunnings.

She got,

Brand- Plasti-Kote
Sub-title- (Projekt Paint)
Type- Gloss Super
Colour- Olive greenish and gray

And for the primer

Brand- Plasti-Kote
Sub-title- (Projekt Paint)
Type- Primer super
Colour- Gray









Hope their good. my Recon and Deploy will be arriving tomorrow morning

EDIT: They were like $11.50 each :/ and i got 3. A Primer and 2 gloss colors (gray+green).

Looks like a German brand :D. It'll be shiny, that's for sure.

A non-paint option is vinyl dye. It'll permanently alter the colour of the plastic. VHT make some nice vinyl dyes, it's a bit pricier then paint though (around $20).

Along with the Primer you'll need an Overcoat or a sealer of some sort, or else you're hands will take off the paint with their sweatiness, and I don't care if that's not a real word.

Where can I get that?

Auto-barn or strathfield usually. I've got a few can's I haven't has a chance to try it out yet. I have used the plasti-kote stuff though. It's quite good.

Never get GLOSS only get Matte.

I just went to Toyworld and purchased some Tamiya spray cans. It's little expensive but I hope it works out well.

Hey mate.
I have this type of spray paint and its works fine.
But the downside, the first week of using your weapons it is really sticky so use them often.
Do lots of thin coats to get the best out off them.

Regarding the vinyl dye, if the paint job doesn't turn out the right way, say used the wrong colour etc. would it still sand down the same for repainting with a different vinyl dye? Or once it's set it would that be the colour for good / repainting not worth it.

You can rub it back, but it does take a bit more effort than normal paint.

Best thing to do is rub it back until its dull then hit it with a light coat of primer, then re-paint.

Ok, I've painted about 10 guns, Plastikote is RUBBISH i cannot stress that enough, it is so thick it cramps all your moving parts up.

Dulux quickdry is your best option for nub painters, its really thin misty paint, and hardly ever runs, and dries within 10 minutes for those impatient painters.

I used another brand from bunnings called metal something, its about 12$ a can and you can get some awesome colours, and with dry brushing or sanding they make your gun look realish like metal.

In saying plastikote is rubbish, I would DEFINATELY recommend their primer, ive used one can of it for 10 guns (big ones too like stampedes longshots/strikes) just a light mist creates a great surface to paint.

I'm thinking that it's a silly question, but you do need to sand and prime even if you use vinyl dye right?

My first paint job and I used the cheapest paint out there. I used Black Squirts from Bunnings, and used Australian Export copper,chrome and clear cans from Supercheap Auto. Tell me what you think? I know its not that great. The squirts is OK but its a bit thick. The silver can is too watery and the other two worked like a charm.

One really important tip, which most first-time sprayers NEVER follow:

You are better off with 8 very thin coats rather than 2 thick coats. MISTING them is the key. Spray paint, particularly the cheaper brands, runs very easily. You're better off spraying very THIN coats which will bond better anyway.

Save the shiny coat for the last coat. If it's gloss you're after, polish it after the last coat (+24-48 hours of course!)

What do you think for my first try?

I recently got some brand from my local Bunnings called: Rust-oleum. AFter spraying my Secret strike To texture changed to like a sticky, rough surface. Or did I sand it too much? Anyone else used that?
