I fist got into NERF because of LAN parties. LANs -for those who dont know - are computer parties where a large number of people take their PC's to halls that are hired for a weekend in order to compete in computer games. Lots of sitting for 2 days is nasty, so in order to get people to run around every so often there were NERF war events held periodically.
These were fun. So my friends and I all bought nerf guns.
I only just got mine and havent had much of a chance to use it yet. So ill be attempting to head to melbourne for a war some time.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I got it mostly for the fun of modifying it. I like to draw, build computers, make websites or computer programs, 3d animation, Ive even made a few of those plastic models that come in kits you snap together.
