    Springs!!! Empty Springs!!!

Post  makeitgo Tue Jun 07, 2011 4:09 pm

I've been asked many times what springs I use and where I get them. I don't get them from McMaster Carr because I'm lucky enough to have access to local stores that have decent springs.

These are the main springs I use:

    Springs!!! Sam0073l

    From left to right:

C-874 Century Spring Corp. AKA, the 'MAN' spring.
    1-3/8 x 6 x .120 (inches)
    34.925 x 152.4 x 3.048 (millimeters)
    Springs!!! Springs

6 in. (free length) - 1.68 in. (solid length) = 4.32 in. (maximum length change)
4.32 in. * 13 lb./in. (force needed to move 1 in.) = 56.16 lb. (force needed for total compression)

Obviously, the force required to make a total compression is more than the suggested safe maximum load.

I used to get this from http://www.ottawafastenersupply.com for $8.44 a piece but now order them from here:
    http://www.hardwareandtools.com/Century-Sp...ng-u682484.html. A much better deal.

So far I've only tried this in my Octshot but I'm going to see if it will work in my newly acquired RFSG.

The next 3 are from www.campisprings.com

    812, 810 and 047 respectively references

    812 - Length = 10", OD = 0.875", ID = 0.679", rate = 13lbs/in, max load = 130lbs.

    810 - Length = 6", OD = 0.938", ID = 0.778", rate = 6lbs/in, max load = 36lbs.

    047 - Length = 3.5", OD = 0.875", ID = 0.715, rate = 11.2lbs/in, max load = 39.2lbs.

I buy these at my local mom and pop shop, Preston Hardware

Campi hasn't gotten back to me on prices yet. But Preston has these for $5.99, $4.99 and $1.99 each respectively.

I haven't used the 812 in anything yet but I'm trying to create a home made based on the Max Shot and put it in. I'll need the lever system to compress this to at least 5 inches.

I use the 810 in my current Octo because of the ROF. The C-874 is powerful but the ROF is too low for my style of play. RUSHING!!!

I use the 047 in all my pistols. It gives me a consistent 70' - 80' every time.

The 2 bag-o-random springs I bought from Princess Auto for $4 a bag.

I generally use these as catches and random support.

    - C-874 Century Spring Corp. AKA, the 'MAN' spring.
Go to your Bunnings store at the special orders desk.
Get them to order it for you, as it's not part of their regular stocked items.

    Crikey!
    Wait.
Have you done the right calculations?
Are the length values "free", or maximum displacement (change from free to solid lengths)?
They appear to be free lengths.

I'm going to assume that you'll snip a bit off it and use that, rather than use the whole piece.

Nice bit of copy and paste there.

I vote the latter, since whenever I've seen rates in my engineering textbooks or in datasheets the distance has been the displacement of the end of the spring from its resting position.

Wire diameter is 0.098", and if "TOURS" in the original means turns then 23.5 turns then:

    23.5 * 0.098 = 2.303" high when it's at full compression.

    10 - 2.303 = 7.697" displacement

    7.697 * 13 = 100 lb at full compression. Damn....

    Good job, Mig, handy stuff.

LittleBro told me I could special order a Man spring from Bunnings instead of getting it from Canada, save me a fair few dollars there! Hahaa.

Interesting Agent 238232. Either way, I'll still need a lever. I know I can't prime 100 lbs without one. I can barely curl 50lbs with one arm at the gym. The home made I'm proposing will be at least twice the size of the Max Shot.

Bicep/concentration curls are an isolation movement. You'll be able to use delts, tricep and bicep, as well as forearm in priming a blaster, so a 50lb compression will be much less strain than a 50lb curl. I had a little over 70lb spring compression in a LS, and had to use both hands, but that was to distribute the weight evenly on the bolt sled (which failed regardless haha) - but the resistance wasn't that bad. (For reference, I curl 110lb with two arms, so we're in the same ball-park).

Anyone got a good idea for a replacement spring for the Stampede that's readily available?

I sell springs for the Stampede, the springs are made locally here in Australia, so support Australian business.

The BT springs are only 9kg load.

You can get 13kg springs from Singapore, but they need to be honed down to fit in most Stampede plunger tubes, which is a total pain.

I've trialled the BT 9kg, SgN 13kg and Servulus 13kg.

Servulus' 13kg spring is by far the winner. It fits perfectly in the plunger tube, and delivery is quicker, and the total price is definitely cheaper.

Keep the money in Australia for sure.

Want more proof - I own 7 Stampede's, with 3 being my personal units, 1 completed commission, 2 currently under commissioning, and 1 awaiting someone to commission it from me.

5 of them have/will have Servulus' springs in them...

I also agree with keeping the business in Australia. I hope I don't offend the NH fanboys who worship the northern hemisphere. Oh wait, I don't care.

Hey MIG, have you considered using the barrel as a lever, as in break action air rifles? If i ever make a homemade, that's going to be it.

    Hey all,

Was just wondering if any one could tell me where to get or hook me up with something like an 11kg spring. Its for a raider cs-35. Fairly new to the whole nerf scene so if any one has any suggestions on the best spring replacement the raider i'd love to hear it.

    Thanks

    Hey, thanks for that Luke!

That kit's going OK, with some good reports/feedback from customers.

I have sitting on my desk right now (just arrived today)samples for my Australian made inner/outer longshot spring combination, totaling about a 21kg load.

If I wasn't 98% dead with the flu, I'd be putting them through their paces.

    Soon...

WOW those are some beefy springs, is the second one (left to right) stronger than a K26?
Edit: How do you cut down a really beefy spring e.g K26
