Funnily enough in my line of work I've actually worked on train simulators for Sydney's trains. So I know how to drive a train tooclunk07 wrote:Don't become a train driver.... seriously!!

If you want to get into the law, being a bartender beforehand is recommended. The cops love people who know how to deal with drunks and fights, and it will make it easy as to get in
I want to either be a Policeman or join the Army. The only job I've had is cherry-sorting.

You'd be familiar with them, but trust me, the simulator's are nothing like the real thing!! haha
You don't get to experience the massive hits and shunts up in the cab on a simulator...
@BPV - never in my life have I heard that being a bar-tender is a preferred pre-req for joining the Police Force. They teach you all that stuff in the Academy.

Re: Where do you work or want to work?
Yeah from what I assume of you, you drive freight trains whereas I've only practice on tiny suburban commuter trains All I know is that I should approach a station doing ideally less than 60km/hr to stop by the end of the platform. For you, your stopping distance is probably a couple of km more haha.clunk07 wrote:Vavoom wrote:Funnily enough in my line of work I've actually worked on train simulators for Sydney's trains. PS. Matt, I studied mechatronic engineering and now I work at RailCorp so if you have any questions, I'd be glad to answer them.

Re: Where do you work or want to work?
@Vavoom - I drive coal trains mate, it's fairly segregated up here with freight, passenger and coal divisions, so I'll probably never have to worry about passenger's or the hassles that come with them (as well as the $15k drop in pay haha)
Our normal loaded consist is 4 to 5 loco's, with 98 coal wagons. Total weight generally is around 10322 tonne, with an effective crossing loop length of 1686 metres. Averaged speed is 65km/h, but we sit around 75 - 80km/h where we can, conditions permitting. QR National are implementing new electric loco consists of 3 loco's, with 120 wagons, taking it pretty close to the 2000 metre mark!!
At 80km/h, using an emergency brake application, it will probably take around 1200 metres or more to come to a complete stop.
Advice for the day - don't race trains over road crossings in a car!!
Mechatronic engineering sounds very interesting.
The simulator's are pretty cool, when they're working!! haha

Re: Where do you work or want to work?
Currently a train driver, as mentioned above.
But prior to this, I've had a few roles in the workforce, including:
Boiler-maker
Heavy Equipment Serviceman
Crane Driver
Rigger/Scaffolder
Maintenance Planner
Operations Manager
Logistic's Allocator/Manager
Whatever it takes to pay the bills really.

Well, started with Cafe work, then did scanning for my Dad, which sucked, but it paid for a trip to Europe. Then, worked in a Coffee shop, quit, and joined my present job as . . . An accountant.

Re: Where do you work or want to work?
Where do i start: Since i had my first job back in about 1985,i left school before turning 15, so one of these 3 jobs would have been my first: Selling lollies for charity, selling vacuum cleaners for Kirby or as a checkout operator at a supermarket... always went through jobs pretty quickly. I had a car and a licence by the time i had the next one i can remember, must have been about 16yo was making computer cables, lots of fine soldering work. After this i got kicked out of home and spent about 2 years homeless. It was during this time that i stumbled upon photography and in 1988 i took up a job as a sports photographer in the US. That job got me through till 1991, then i had this brainstorming idea to start up a company manufacturing bicycle components, that went bankrupt in 1995. In 1998 i went back to photography for a few years until digital cameras killed the industry, no money in it now. So now i make clothing to sell on eBay.
My dream job was always to integrate my love for electronics and mechanics and to do Robotics Engineering. Sadly this was never to happen, but i do have the skills to do the work. So one day i hope to be able to make enough money from the clothing sales, to buy machines and equipment to begin designing and building my own automated services. Just got to take the longest and hardest road to get there.

Re: Where do you work or want to work?
I know that its around that much, but only because of the stress factor, and that many public train drivers become suicidal after hitting someone. Got that fact from an actual driver.

Not impossible.Ungodlyfreak wrote:...or the LHC - Large Hadron Collider.
One of my old classmates has something to do with it already.
Funny that nobody expected him to go into that field, as he did not seem to be the physics type.
Too bad, I don't have Facebook, so I'm quite behind on the news involving chums of 2003.
Nor am I the type of person who would be interested in such small talk.

At the coal depot's for QR National, a fully qualifed driver is on $117, 300 p.a.
I'm pretty sure the rate of pay for passenger trains is considerably less, due to shorter trains, and no remote locomotives. The stress levels are up there due to suicides, but the work is considerably easier as opposed to bulk haulage operations.

This man inspires me.
I've worked in IT sales manager/purchasing with a starting role in warehouse. Didn't like that all to much so I worked at a restaurant for awhile it's not bad but not great either at the moment I hold both that job and a job in Payroll with some accounting and admin stuff.
Eventually I will take over the world I've always dreamed of owning the entire planet with an iron fist. Seriously though I'd like to work at the ports in Import/Export and something in logistics would be great fun
@ Clunk
Do me a favor, come down to Ipswich drive some trains and kill all the bogans which come onto the tracks as a game every day
