Semi Auto MegaStrike Write-up Empty Semi Auto MegaStrike Write-up

Post  bakabill Tue Aug 23, 2011 3:41 pm

This is my writeup for making a semi auto megastrike

After seeing this write up on a semi auto magstrike on NH:
    http://nerfhaven.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=21373
I fell in love, however that love was not strong enough to shell out $40 for a shotblast.

Then came the megastrike that Lefty posted:
    http://www.oznerf.com/t3658-megastrike-mega-missile-magstrike-reshell

I had a MM lying around and a Magstrike which I never use... so I guess there was no reason not to finally give this a shot!

    What you need:

    Megamissile tank
    Magstrike
Check valve - I got mine from an aquarium store
Tubing to suit check valve - I am using 4mm aquarium tubing because that is also the size of the magstrike tubing
Barbed Connectors for your tubing - again, 4mm fits the standard magstrike tubes!

Alright, similarly to Lefty's arrangement - Cut down your megamissile pump tube and place a barbed connector inside it then block up the end with epoxy putty and seal with araldite

    Semi Auto MegaStrike Write-up 111

Next, the magstrikes built in air-fill button should be relocated to a position so that you can press it from outside the shell (the nerfhaven writeup placed it right above the trigger, however I chose the location shown due to personal preference)

Once you've decided where you want it, connect the button back to the bladder using your barbed connectors and tubing as shown:

    Semi Auto MegaStrike Write-up 211

Make any adjustments to your shell to allow the tubing to pass without getting squished and thus impede airflow!

    Semi Auto MegaStrike Write-up 311

Secure your air-fill button to the shell making sure it's positioned upright.
You can see that there's a green check valve connected right after the button - this is important to stop the air from being lost back through the button!

    Semi Auto MegaStrike Write-up 415
The check valve is connected to the barbed connector going into the Megamissile pump tube (as shown in the very first picture)

Connect whatever type of RSCB you want to the megamissile. I am using a weird arrangement of cut down PVC fitting + Conduit couplers.
This is because conduit couplers are smaller than the pvc couplers, allowing me to place the T-coupler lower in the shell (this allows me to better fit my RSCB setup inside the shell)

    Semi Auto MegaStrike Write-up 513

My RSCB clip with ball valve integrated into the shell so that I can open and close the valve from the exterior of the shell.

    Semi Auto MegaStrike Write-up 612

You will need to hack the shell a fair bit to get the ball valve to fit- otherwise you can simply use an endcap or something that sticks out beyond the shell, as seen in Lefty's pics!

Now connect the firing pin of the tank to the magstrike trigger - I drilled a hole into the trigger and tied a wire around the two parts to join them, make sure the wire is VERY taught or your trigger pull will not open the valve fully and lead to poor air output!

    Semi Auto MegaStrike Write-up 712

Finally you will have to cut a hole on the opposite shell to allow access to the air-fill button - the position of this hole depends on where you placed your button, so this is for you to figure out

I placed a black nub over the slim orange button to make the button push easier.

    Semi Auto MegaStrike Write-up 811

Screw that shell closed and you're done!

    Semi Auto MegaStrike Write-up 912

This is actually a fairly easy mod to do - it took me about 4hours of work to complete.

For those interested in seeing it in action simply check out the vid in the nerfhaven writeup... it's esentially the same.

The blaster performs very well - I haven't had a chance to range test it. I will try to make a video when I figure out how to work youtube... :S

One of my initial concerns was that the size of the tank might not suit the bladder pressure well, but it definitely performs above expectations- rough estimate it's just a little under the 4b power level.

I would also imagine that this could be done with an UMB tank since it's reportedly similar in size to the megamissile.

Hope you liked this write-up, feel free to ask any questions!

This is excellent!!! I love how you positioned the ball valve. I would do a pump replacement while I was at it too personally. I'd love to see someone add an air compressor to it as well. That would be one crazy blaster.

You should enter this into the modding comp.

    thanks guys

@Oxy, yea I believe a dual action pump would be ideal - I will try it in future, but for now I'm happy with this and yes I will enter this into the comp - Almost forgot about that!

Kudo's to you mate, very nice work indeed.

As you mentioned, the only addition needed would be a pump replacement.

Just a suggestion when your doing the trigger, make sure its pulling paralleled from the tank if its pulling up then your going to have problems with it leaking and the metal "pull bar" bending.

@Lefty, thanks - it gets 4 full power shots and the 5th shot is only at about 60% power

@Mavman, yeah good point - I think I'll make some changes at the wire tonight to get it level with the pin, better safe than sorry!

What's the range and shot capacity comparison mate, between using the MM tank and the BBUMB tank?

I managed to get a MM from Amazon, just have to wait for it to arrive in a month or so... haha.

Clunk: It holds 5 streamline-size shots in the RSCB and can fire a full clip on a single tank at 35m+. Just opened it up and found a leak, back to 40m-45m like it should be.

Keep in mind, I've done the bladder expansion mod from SGnerf, which probably explains why. Only qualm I have with using the BBUMB tank is that you have to cut the tube at the back of the tank to less than 1cm from the end of it (I hope you can visualize what I'm talking about. :P). It takes a bit more chopping and gluing, but I think its worth it.

That sounds pretty awesome. Good range, and 5 rounds is pretty sweet!!

haha - now I don't know which tank to use... lol

I'm pretty sure I understand which bit you're referring to. If nothing else, at least the BBUMB tanks are easier to source than the MM tanks.

If you already have an MM tank, make a mega raider, use a BBUMB for this. Now you know which to use haha

The thin tube at the back of the BBUMB release valve is the tank, the one way valve is at the base of the pump shaft. So the 'tank' is now the air line running to the release valve. This means with a little tweaking of that line you could get bigger (scary) ranges again.

Great work, I think I may do this mod to our LongBumb.

Internals shot, as you can see, its somewhat ghetto as I was lazy with my hose placement. I also used a 20mm ball valve and have it sticking out a little further so I can fit an extra dart. I had tried to fit it into the shell but it was too wide. I think the white PVC ones are a bit better for fit, mine was initially designed for use in irrigation systems :P.

    Semi Auto MegaStrike Write-up Photo021
The blue thing is my one-way valve, ignore the roughness of the tank, much hotglue once resided there.

Not shown is my button for the air release, I just used the cut down end of a pen.

This is great, proves that the magstrike bladder can be incorporated into another very common airtank and opens up possibilities for some really cool integrations.

I am considering doing this with my at3k, there seems to be enough room in the back of the 3k shell to fit the bladder!

Having semi auto shots will eliminate the major disadvantage of air blasters and the lower RoF due to repumping after each shot.

There should be no real reason why the magstrike bladder couldn't be attached to any air tank system, as an external air supply for semi-auto firing.

And, yes, the possibilities are fairly endless....

    (Did someone say semi-auto Titan......)

    Exactly!

But with a tank as big as the titan you'd have to mod the bladder to hold a LOT more air

Else you might only get 2 shots out of the titan IF that, lol

I was thinking of making an external hard-tank for a semi-auto titan. Still not sure of what direction I'm heading in with it.

With the pump replacement I've done already, it only takes 4 pumps to fill the air tank, so semi-auto probably wouldn't really be much of a bonus.

But there are a lot of other applications where this will be extremely useful. Like making a LongStrike actually useful for something except looking cool... lol

Yep I had the same thought, bladder in the longstrike stock would be so perfect

Btw, I could not compare ranges of Megastrikes with Bacara today cos' he didn't show up.

However the range test of my megastrike was hitting 30m quite easily, Echoes' singled BBUMB was shooting further (around 40m?), so Bacara's megastrike (reported 35m+) most likely gets further ranges compared to mine!

Either way, that's still pretty decent ranges for such compact blaster's.

I'm pretty sure gooni has done the bladder coming out the back of a LongStrike, but I can't remember if it's semi-auto or not, or what air tank he's got in it.

Still, it's definitely on my list of things to do.

Whoa nice one, but what would you mean by Semiauto? Weren't the Magstrike Semi Auto? As in you just need to pump the tank till full and the darts will blast away one by one

You're right, but the ranges out of a magstrike are pretty ordinary, and confining them to single shot's takes a bit of practice too.

With this, you get decent range, 4 to 5 rounds, and no pumping in-between.
