Re: Spray paint VS Handpainted
A mixture of the 2 methods is actually the best way to go about it. Use spray paint to do your primer and main coats, then follow with detail by hand.

Yes,but For spraying you have to take the shell apart, and internals out,I'm not up to that. And sanding how long should it take for a really good sand?

Re: Spray paint VS Handpainted
well get used to taking stuff apart before spraying them, you will get a much more professional looking finish. As for sanding a light sanding will suffice, this means that all surface has light scratches in it.

Re: Spray paint VS Handpainted
Ok but as for sanding I saw this video of a guy making a "Radioactive" Maverick. And he says the reason he gets good looking paint jobs is because of his sanding. I see no scratches.

The paint will fill in the scratches and thus giving it a smooth finish. If you sand anything it will make scratches on the surface, these scratches allow the paint to adhere to it better.

This is why we have a questions thread....
The scratches help the paint adhere. The paint fills them up.

Takes me nearly 3 hours to fully sand and prep a LongShot for painting...

Re: Spray paint VS Handpainted
took me about 5 to 10 minutes to sand my recon for painting. But i may have cheated slightly... lightly sand blasted it at a very low setting of air pressure worked fantastically and was very fast.

Re: Spray paint VS Handpainted
yeh, I've been thinking about getting a small sand blaster, and dropping the psi to bare minimum. Not sure yet, would save me alot of time though

Re: Spray paint VS Handpainted
Even a sanding attachment on a dremel might work.
I use spray paint, and i always spray 2 coats of clear when finished.
And for finer details i use a small brush. If you want a nice, very mild, or faint glitter, use pearl clear.

Sanding attachment on a dremel isn't very effective, it actually creates more work...

The revs are way too high, generating a lot of heat quickly from the friction.clunk07 wrote:Tried it on a Mav, melted the plastic!! hahaha

Re: Spray paint VS Handpainted
I used the wire wheel attachment on my NF, which worked. Have to be very careful as Clunk's right, it just spins too fast, makes too much friction. Plus it looked shit, it was so uneven. Hand sanding is the best way for the price. I don't have a sand blaster, lol. It's nice and even, you don't wreck anything because it's a slow process.
It must have taken me about two or there hours for my LS, too, Clunk. Not an exciting process! Lol

Dont you guys have variable speed on your dremels?

Re: Spray paint VS Handpainted
The lowest speed is still generally too fast, and the relatively small surface area of the sanding bit means that the same area is receiving friction with little opportunity to dissapate the heat produced.boosted6 wrote:Dont you guys have variable speed on your dremels?
It does not take a lot of heat to soften and eventually melt the plastic, and making a mess.
The same bit would be okay if used on wood or some other materials, as it can cope with higher temperatures.

Re: Spray paint VS Handpainted
Yep, different speeds, but like Mull said, the lowest is way too fast. It's just a stupid way to sand, use sand paper, it's better. Or if you have a sand blaster.

Re: Spray paint VS Handpainted
Yeh what I do is
Sanding 1st layer (Wash with warm water)
Sanding 2nd layer (Wash with warm water)
Apply primer if available or necessary
Spray Paint Main Colour
Use hand paint for detailing
2 Clear coats
I find Australian export isn't bad with good primer. Supercheap also has some good deals for them every few weeks.

The speed of the dremel was perfect, and not too high. We're talking about a small sanding drum, which is way too coarse for this purpose.
RPM's being too low will do the same damage as too high. You must have a great range of speeds on your rotary tool. The slowest speed on my dremel is way too slow for any sanding application.
Servulus' method of sand-blasting would probably be the quickest, but also has associated risks.
@Mozart - yeh, 3 hours or longer on each Longshot - I've painted 3 in the last 2 days - you do the math.... I haven't slept much, that's for sure.
Cheers,
