crossbow interest (its not what you might think)

Post  abowden on Sat Aug 06, 2011 7:41 am

I have contacted a manufacturer willing to custom produce nerf blasters, but I will need a lot of interest for my plans to go ahead.
in case you didn't guess from te title, the first port of call is the crossbow (everyone loves a crossbow)
    EDIT:
Spread the word, every nerfer needs to know about this!
    EDIT:
cost has been updated to about 2.50 per unit.
    Edit: Project has been cancelled.

    It's worth a shot, I'm interested.

It'd be great to see improved internals as well, like those being sold over at NH.

    We need more details.

I've got stock crossbow that I could start drafting on CATIA to hand the plans to a plastic prototyper. We don't know what your plans are.

And where do you suggest they will get the measurements? The plans? The MOQ costs before a tender is issued? Bringing them into Australian with postage? I think there needs to be more afterthought into this initiative before you give us a "my plans are simple" explanation.

They custom design nerf guns, I am sure they will manage. (though if you do what you said earlier that would be wonderful)
yeah probably should have put more thought into that.

What about copyright on the Crossbow design? Hasbro might not like you reproducing their products.

I considered that, but they no longer produce it.
Also, there are LOADS of copies of night finders and mavericks out there.

    Very good point.
Any numbers you know about? As in how long it would take, How accurate, price, how much interest you need?

I do know it may cost about 1-4 dollars a unit, there are mould costs e.t.c. , also minimum order quantity is 3000 units
I will have to launch a kick starter campaign to get this thing off the ground, and sell units to local stores.
please don't be put off the minimum order quantity.

    $1-4 per unit?

So you're actually going to sell these to stores? Are you going to start your own brand?

Sorry but I don't see this happening, although if you do, I'm definitely interested in a couple.

lovely to see how helpful the comunity is here
advertising will not be necessary yet, in case it falls through.
though when I start the kick starter campaign, I would love you to tell everyone you know.
also there is not much I can do until I either have a crossbow, or a detailed schematic of some kind.

I'm sure many of the well know modders would be happy to help you advertise as well. Who doesn't want a crossbow?

But seriously, how much will they cost? I just don't believe they'll only be a couple of bucks.

$1 sounds fine from a manufacturer. By the time it makes it to retail that'll look alot more like $30-$whatever they think people will pay.

Plastic is pretty much almost worthless. There's a reason we make absolutely everything out of it.

I'm willing to buy a bucket load for that price and help get these started. Also, you can sell them to the US modders for heaps, expensive ($40+) and in bulk. They will pay.

Those AV Checks mean nothing and are easy to obtain.

Proving a Chinese/Taiwanese/Indonesian/Indian supplier legit is not as easy as it seems.

I do close to 40 checks and about 10 phone calls myself before I even sample off a company to produce goods. Reason being is 90% of these factories are con jobs and produce illegal goods and their business practices aren't even legit. Those knockoffs you see on Alibaba, if you import them and you get caught you will receive one whopping fine. In Fact sadly 60%+ of what you see on Alibaba is usually a scam or second rate product. Even after those checks I've recommended to people I've heard of people still being conned out of money even from AV checked suppliers. Alibaba is simply an ebay system for bulk buying, except in Alibaba more than half the listings are frauds. I personally avoid it and talk to actual people and factories myself.

You simply cannot reproduce a crossbow, Hasbro will have you and everything you own in court the next day.

Molds are also expensive especially plastic molds, silicone not so much, but for a plastic mold from a GOOD chinese supplier it will still cost you roughly $1000-$10,000 each you can't just mold the shell in one hit either it's not that simple. A salesperson will always under quote their MOQ's etc I can guarantee you 3,000 is not even half of what you'll need to order to keep the unit price down.

Put it this way to make a plastic cap like a snap cap, just the mold for that $1,500 in that plastic.

Also you have to take into account, shipping, customs and the laws here, generally a unit cost can double even triple with the joke of a tax system we have in place here.

The plastic must reach a VERY strict standard to get into the country, also a new product shipped across must undergo a lab test to see if the levels meet the correct standards. Some of this costs 10,000-20,000 depending on the product. This is VERY strict on toys in particular.

There are thousands of things and costs you don't see from just a quick look, and some of them if you aren't careful involve heavy fines.

Be Very VERY VERY Careful, take it from someone who's done a lot of research and importing, mistakes can you land you in a big pile of shite.
