OK, so I know that I have to get FBR for the body, but I am unsure what to use for the weight. I saw one video where the guy made the heads from hot glue in a playdo mould, then melted a bit to make them stick in the body of the dart. Most other sources say to use split shot fishing weights, or metal washers. I am concerned also about the safety factor as I have a 9yr old sister who is... Let's just say... Fragile. Mum would kill me if the darts left welts and/or bruises.
So... what can I use and how do I get performance without sacrificing safety?
EDIT:
Custom NERF Darts - "Stefans"
This is the method I will most likely be using to make my Stefans. I didn't want to use any kind of metal weight or anything too painful, so I settled for hot glue (which is still better than the original streamlines).
Materials:
-FBR: Foam Backer Rod, available from hardware stores, must be in 1/2 inch.
-Hot glue: colored is optional, but looks cool.
Method:
1. Cut FBR to desired length - official darts are 6.4cm long, use this as a guide.
2. Place all the cut blanks in a pillowcase and put into a dryer for approx. 10mins on medium. When finished, the blanks should be straight.
3. Take one blank and, with a hot glue gun, melt a hole in the centre of the top of the dart.
4. Fill the hole with hot glue, and make a small dome of glue on the top.
5. Repeat steps 3-4 as necessary.
Is there anything wrong with this way of making them? Is there anything I should be doing differently?
