25M/80' Recon mod (should work with all other reverse plunger blasters) Empty 25M/80' Recon mod (should work with all other reverse plunger blasters)

Post  Dietzie Tue Dec 28, 2010 3:28 pm

Yes I can see the flameage coming at me already but this mod got my Recon to shoot 25M flat and into the wind before hitting tall weeds 30cm above the ground in the neighbours yard.

The mod itself is very simple and should work on any reverse plunger blaster.
The biggest problem with R/P blasters from what I can gather is the void behind the dart. By reducing this dead space and preventing the air compression (and therefore lower air velocity) between pulling the trigger and the dart breaking the seal in the barrel.

The Recon I used for this mod was already hitting 40' with an A/R removal and preloaded spring.
25M/80' Recon mod (should work with all other reverse plunger blasters) PB300002

As you can see in the following picture there is a lot of dead space in the tube.
25M/80' Recon mod (should work with all other reverse plunger blasters) PB300003

    Now to rectify this problem.
First up identify where the A/R was located and mark it.
25M/80' Recon mod (should work with all other reverse plunger blasters) PB300004

Then measure and cut a piece of small tubing to fit between your mark and the back of the tube( I used 10mm O/D 1mm wall alloy tubing)
Then using tape, grommets, silicon or expanda foam fix the tubing in to the center of the plunger tube flush with the base.
25M/80' Recon mod (should work with all other reverse plunger blasters) PB300007

    Big difference

25M/80' Recon mod (should work with all other reverse plunger blasters) PB300008

Allow to cure/set, re-assemble and keep out of reach of children

Edit: Don't forget the plunger padding if you have removed your A/Rs. This applies to all R/P blasters.

You said correctly. 25metres flat is already impossible for a Recon :P. With the strongest spring I could fine t he best I could get 25 metres angled at max.

Well I'm getting that flat, with stock Stream Lines and a stock pre-loaded spring. Give it a go. You have nothing to loose

I would give it ago but I don't have a recon at the moment. (I do, but it's a bit faulty).

I still won't believe you lol. I bet if you bring it out to a Nerf War, you will get completely different results :P.

Pre-loading the spring is pretty much what it sounds like.
All you do is pack the spring seat to hold more tension on the spring, ie: Maverick: Coins or washers behind the spring
Recon: Wire wrapped around the tube infront of the spring and taped down to hold it in place ( Black electrical tape as in pics)

You know what. I can believe you can hit 25m with that mod. Why? because stock streamlines have a very rare tendency to fishtail upwards, so if you count that one hail mary shot as your ranges, it makes sense. Though you won't even get close to hitting the broardside of Aj's ego using stock streamlines

Not to mention you can get some fluke shots firing into the wind too

Pointless range argument aside how will this mod affect your plunger I wonder?

In theory this mod would actually reduce the chance of damaging the plunger by adding some resistance to the air flow. I'm not talking any large margins but a small percentage reduction of breakages that would have happened.
I think I have worked out how to shoot the video, once the rain at least eases I'll get to it.

    Tom's right.
Aj fired his RF20 with stock streamlines when I was about 30m away. I thought no problem but I hid behind a tree. The dart curved around the tree and hit me.
I might try this though I'd be expecting about 60'. You may be right though streamlines are so retarded.

What is the average distance in meter's a modded Recon achieves? Ours seems to hit 15-16m.
I'll give this mod ago but I'll have to wait a while as the kids have asked me to stop breaking their stuff.

EDIT:Hello. My name is phuonguyen. You might know me. I'm a member of the administration of Oz Nerf dot com. Yes, the "boys in blue" I think is the affectionate name given to us. Well there's one little thing, you might not know about us. We. Have. Absolute. Power. Well, as far as this forum is concerned.

What does this mean for you? It means that I can do pretty much anything I want. Including editing your posts, or anyone else's posts. Tell you what, to also cement the idea that I CAN, in fact, do anything. There's something different.

    Kind regards,

You idiot, it's a mature language filter that has been put in place by the admins so that when certian key word (i.e. 'f'word, word for poo beginning with 's' stuff like that) become altered automatically to what you did in this post.

Isnt this obvious to 99.9 percent of the people on the forum?

I asked an admin to remove this post until I could get consistent ranges at which point I will post the video proof. The mod does make decent improvements to the range but as expected I make no guarantees of the possible range increase. In the mean time, ignore the range in the title and just take what you get.

Well I don't really see the point in deleting the thread. I can lock the thread if you like, just PM myself or an admin if you have the proof.

Though it is highly unlikely, the ranges seem unfeasible. It's a good habit to take an average across 5 or 10 darts. That way it removes the fluke/miraculous shots with streamlines and stefans.

Oh big deal. Have a cry about losing your contributor status going missing. Have you done anything else to contribute to the forum besides winge and cringe about things Nope, nothing. TheBradl3's on the other hands he actually got his contributor through hard ernest work by writing up modifications that are detailed yet easy to follow. And after he got contributor status, he continued to contribute to these forums with more write-ups. He's younger than you and he does more work than you did.

Anyway, the contributor is just a 'status'. It's like being a school captain. After you graduate, no one really cares about them anymore and life goes on.

Dietzie, sure we have some 'doubts'. However, I'm actually going to try it out on a Recon to see if it actually works. Even though I have my doubts about it, doesn't hurt to try. As most people know, I jump the gun alot... something I should stop doing... eventually.

    Ok. I'm bumping this thread.

After I spouted some flaming about this modification, I decided to do it with my own Recon. Here are the results I'm getting...

    Legend:
    1. - deadspace
    2. - deadspace reduction

Results are recorded on my drive way which is about 50ft long from where I'm standing. These ranges are also measured at a 5-10degree angle. These darts are shot 'UP my drive way" and the up hill angle is approximately 10-15degrees.
Inside the recon is a Black Tactical Longshot Version 1 Spring (1.7x the length of the normal BT Recon / Raider / Deploy Spring). AR has been removed and O-Ring lubed up.

Ranges with Blue Foam Stefans... -
    1. 12-15metres
    2. 14-17metres

    Ranges with Streamlines... -
    1. 15-17metres
    2. 18-20metres

I have felt the amount of air that has come out of the actual R Plunger AFTER the deadspace reduction and the amount of air I feel on my arm is approximately as much as you would feel from a double o-ring'd nitefinder. This mod does increase the air flow. However, claiming that this modification has 'doubled your range' is a bit of bullshat. However, I do now believe that this gun is 'war worthy' after you have done this modification and should be done in most R Plunger guns.

Just to confirm, this mod DOES NOT double your range, BUT it will increase you range up to maybe 3-5metres as results vary. Thanks for the write Dietzie!
