Usually we measure the power of our guns with the distance the dart travels(Normally in feet). Sometimes we use FPS. Nerf guns are very similar to an Airsoft Rifle, both have plunger tubes but the plunger tube of a Nerf gun is much larger and designed to shoot a projectile of something much larger. In a way, they are exactly the same. Most Airsoft weapons are illegal in Australia so we use nerf as a substitute.
I got this for you as some help This is a homemade Nerf pistol
All information was from this site: http://dev.squarecows.com/2012/02/16/build-a-better-nerf-gun/
1. To cock the gun, the user pulls back the (A) ring. This slides the telescoping plunger’s (B) inner rod back until its inner stop hits the inner rod (C) catch piece.
2. Further pulling draws the (D) piston back against the (E) compression spring, until the (F) catch wire clicks sideways into a groove in the end stop, holding the piston back in its cocked position.
3. The user may then push the ring back in, telescoping the plunger rod back with the pull ring just behind the (G) end cap.
4. Pulling the (H) trigger causes a (I) sliding plate to release the catch wire. The piston pushes forward and propels the (J) Nerf dart with air pressure squeezed from the chamber into the narrower barrel, rather than through direct spring action.

The inner diameter of barrels for Nerf is generally 1/2".
Common barrel materials in America are 1/2" PETG, 17/32" brass and 1/2" CPVC.

Similar, but CPVC has a smaller diameter than regular PVC.
If I'm remembering correctly, you can actually fit 1'2" CPVC inside 1/2" PVC with a little sanding.

Orange Mod Works sell upgrade kits for most blasters, including stronger plastic parts and stronger springs. They're a good place to start for newcomers to the modding scene. Another similar source for upgrade parts is Black Tactical.
Airsoft guns aren't really a good source for Nerf mod parts, as it's generally frowned upon to make a Nerf blaster resemble a real firearm, and I don't know how well a Nerf blaster will hold up to transplanting airsoft internals. Better to stick with the suppliers who specialize in Nerf modifications.
Oh, and if you're most familiar with airsoft guns, check out the Nerf Stampede. It has a gearbox and is motor driven, a very simple version of an AEG, but it shoots Nerf darts.
